Prof. Dr. Liu Zhaoping is the director of AdvancedLi-ion Battery Engineering Lab, Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology &Engineering (NIMTE), Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received his PhD ininorganic chemistry from University of Science & Technology of China (USTC)in 2004. He then worked as postdoctoral researcher in National Institute forMaterial Science (NIMS), Japan, and State University of New York (SUNY) atBinghamton, between 2004 and 2008. Since Oct. 2008, he has worked in NIMTE inthe field of graphene and lithium-ion batteries. He has published near 100peer-reviewed papers with total citing of over 3500, and received more than 100patents.

Abstract

Graphene possesses distinct properties such as large specific surface area, excellent electrical conductivity high chemical stability, and so on. These superiorities make it possible to apply in next-generation batteries with high energy density and high power density. In addition, Li-ion batteries can be enhanced by adding graphene in the term of lengthening life-time, shortening charging times and reducing battery temperature, etc. Consequently, so-called ‘Super Batteries’ developed by graphene will possibly bring brand-new revolution to industry of battery and electric vehicle.  However, from the present laboratory research results, both capacity and cycle life of the graphene batteries are poor, far from the theoretical speculation. Therefore, is it possible to design and develop new-type graphene electrode materials with high energy density and high power density? Will the technological revolution of graphene battery realize? This talk presents several research strategies about graphene-based electrode materials, and introduces our exploration works for high performance graphene-based electrode materials.
