Liu Zhongfan is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an academician of the Academy of Sciences of Developing Countries. Director of the Beijing Graphene Research Institute and Liberal Arts Chair Professor at Peking University. Vice Chairman of the Chinese Chemical Society and Vice Chairman of the China International Association for the Promotion of Science and Technology. Editor-in-chief of "Acta Physical Chemistry" and executive editor-in-chief of "Scientific Bulletin". Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of Jiusan Society and Chairman of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee; Member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Vice Chairman of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
Graduated from Changchun University of Technology in 1983, studied in Japan in 1984, received a PhD from the University of Tokyo in 1990, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Tokyo and the National Institute of Molecular Science from 1991 to 1993. In June 1993, he returned to Peking University to teach and was promoted to professor in the same year. In 1993, he was funded by the Trans-Century Outstanding Talents Fund of the State Education Commission. In 1994, he was funded by the National Science Foundation of China's Outstanding Youth Science Fund. In 1999, he was appointed as a distinguished professor of the Yangtze River Scholars Award Program. In 2011, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2013, he was among the first batch of "Ten Thousand Scholars" selected by the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. He is an outstanding talent in the Talent Plan and was elected as an academician of the Academy of Sciences of Developing Countries in 2015.
