George Zhao is the professor of College of Chemical Science and Engineering of Qingdao University, and Professor of School of Chemical Engineering of The University of Queensland (UQ), Brisbane, Australia. He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from UQ in 1999. In 1999-2000, he was a UQ postdoctoral research fellow, studying nanoporous materials. He began his academic career in 2001 as an Assistant Professor at National University of Singapore, where he was promoted to associate professor in 2006. He joined UQ in 2011 to work at school of chemical engineering as a full professor to lead a research program focusing on carbon materials for electrochemical energy storage and capacitive desalination. George Zhao also holds a couple of adjunct appointments including Taishan Scholars Chair Professor at Qingdao University, Si-Yuan Professor of Nanjing University, and Honorary Professor of Sichuan University. Dr Zhao is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), Future Fellow of Australian Research Council, Chair Professor of the Chinese Government Global 1000 Talents Program, and DeTao Master of De Tao Group. He is a consultant for Qingdao Global Energy Co. Ltd., and Rizhao Global Advanced Materials Pte. Ltd.
The overall objective of Dr Zhao’s current research is to design new porous materials for energy and environmental applications with an emphasis on understanding the role that surface/interface and nanopores play in these applications. The work demonstrates how porous materials can be designed and synthesized to have desired physical and chemical properties for applications in electrochemical energy storage, water purification, catalysis and adsorption.
