Dr. Yu Haibin is a professor with Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering (NIMTE), Chinese Academy of Sciences. He graduated from Nankai University in 1993 with a Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry and Physics. Then after, Dr. Yu did postdoctoral research on polymeric resins and organic coatings at Department of Polymer Science of The University of Southern Mississippi. For about 20 years, Dr. Yu had been working for major chemical companies in US, developed environmentally friendly coatings, adhesives and sealants. In 2013, Dr. Yu joined NIMTE and started The Advanced Coatings and Adhesives Technology Research Laboratory focusing on developing high performance CAS technologies and products. Most recently, Dr. Yu’s Team developed successfully high performance graphene coatings for heavy duty corrosion protection. In 2014, Dr. Yu was selected as a member of State Thousand Talent Plan and Zhejiang Thousand Talent Plan.

Abstract

Graphene, as a novel 2-dimensional carbon material, possesses excellent electrical conductivity, is non-permeable and thus an excellent barrier to moisture/water, oxygen, chloride ion and other corrosive materials. Graphene itself has been proven to have excellent corrosion protection ability. 

A wide range of market research has concluded that that coatings and composite materials are likely to be the fields where grapheme will realize first industrialization successfully. However, in these areas, the prerequisite for the success is to achieve effective and efficient grapgene dispersion into corresponding polymer matrix. Published results have shown clearly that without proper dispersing, the excellent properties of graphene will not be utilizable. We, therefore, have been focusing our effort on developing economical yet highly efficient graphene dispersing technology. Consequently, we have developed a series of effective graphene dispersing agents. Here, we report our latest research results on dispersing graphene in aqueous medium and the preparation of waterborne epoxy anticorrosive coatings.
