Gunnar Olsen hold a M.Scin chemistry from Southern University of Denmark (SDU) and a PhD degree in chemistry from Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where he as part of the NanoChemistry group research the possibilities within organic functionalization of graphene-like materials with supramolecular moieties for applications within chemical sensory systems. Currently he is working in the Jan O. Jeppesen group at SDU on tetrathiafulvalene based supramolecular systems for unidirectional motion and its potential use in molecular muscles mimics.

Abstract

With properties such as high surface area, high conductivity and low production cost with easy up-scaling graphene-like materials are promising for many applications [1-4],one important feature of chemical derivatives of graphene is the possiblility of surface functionalization. For most system such modification is done on graphene oxide a material devoid of the fantastic electronic properties of graphene some of these electronic properties can be partially regenerated by reduction to RGO [5]. 
This result in a post modification reduction step which some chemically sensitive functionalization cannot handle, therefore we have developed a procedure for high surface concentration functionalization of the RGO surface post reduction through chemically mild procedure “click-chemistry”. 
In our work we have synthesizedazide functionalized RGO. This material offers highly reduced RGO with possibility of post-reduction functionalization through Copper(I)-catalyzed Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition (CuAAC) “click-chemistry” tested on numerous complex and fragile systems [6].
